About Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras are an essential part of CCTV surveillance systems which are intended to improve security of both residential and commercial properties. They work by sending a video image (and sometimes also audio data) to a central unit where the signals transmitted by the CCTV cameras are recorded or monitored in real time by security staff. Basically, CCTV cameras are just like ordinary cameras with the difference that the data they record is intended for internal monitoring.
The Many Types and Models Available
CCTV cameras are available in a wealth of styles, shapes and designs. But while these are more or less a matter of personal taste for aesthetics, there is also a huge difference in the technology between the many types and models available. And it plays an important role in their ability to prevent and record crime. For example, the simple black and white versions with low definitions and without the ability to zoom can’t compare to the high end models featuring the latest technology such as high definition colour image, high zoom scopes, automatic tracking of motion, infra-red (IR) technology, ability to incorporate multiple video stream, etc.
Wired Vs Wireless CCTV Cameras
CCTV cameras can either be wired or wireless. Wireless versions are of course more convenient and much easier to install but the experts warn that you may face issues with signal strength if the camera and central unit are at a considerable distance. On the other hand, running a cable to large distances isn’t a solution either. In case of larger distances between the camera and central unit, it is therefore best to choose a wireless version with a strong WIFI signal.
How CCTV Cameras Improve Security
CCTV cameras don’t prevent crime. Their presence, however, has a deterrent effect on vandals and burglars because it lets them know that they will either be caught by the camera or that they will be seen by the personnel watching the monitors in the central unit if they make any attempts. And this is the last thing they want. As a result, criminals are more likely to walk away upon seeing a CCTV camera. And indeed, crime against property began to decline when residential home owners and commercial establishments started to use CCTV cameras.
Choosing the Right CCTV Camera
With so many different types of CCTV cameras available, the selection of the right one can be very challenging. To make the best choice, you are highly recommended to take some time in order to understand the differences between the many options available. Generally, the more technologically advanced the camera the better but the latest technology also means a higher price. If you are having difficulties deciding, you are advised to ask an expert to asses your security needs and help you with the selection.
