Ouroboros Development
team
Above;
The original Ouroboros development team pictured in Jan 2004 when
the first 4 prototype
units where built and then later tested in Egypt.
Introduction
Kevin Gurr's long term ambition to design and produce his
own rebreather came to a reality when Kevin tested the unit
for the very first time in an outdoor swimming pool in Dorset,
England. That unit (click here
to see) was the MK 3 version Kevin had built back at
the tail end of 2003. During 2002 the unit was under development
and Kevin was working on the build full time in an ambitious
plan to join Carl Spencer's 2003 Britannic expedition with
a view to putting a team into saturation
on the wreck using closed circuit. The funding for this
never materialised and the rebreathers themselves by then
had not developed to the extent they have today. The saturation
team planned for the job was Kevin Gurr, Alan Wright,
Leigh Bishop & Phil Short. The three lads then went
on to join Kevin and his two partners Nick Bushall and Gary
Sharp to develop the unit further. Adam Stubbings joined
the team when they headed out to the Egyptian Red Sea to
begin several long in water trails before testing them in
the cold water later that year. Carl Spencer joined Kevin
for further trials in the pacific before the unit went for
CE testing in the second half of 2004.
Kevin Gurr
Designer, manufacturer &
instructor of the Ouroboros closed circuit rebreather
Marine engineer Kevin Gurr is the designer
behind the Ouroboros rebreather and the VR3 dive computer
and the man who co designed the unit Kevin's dream to
for fill the requirements of a rebreather with safety
fundamentals built in began in the early 1990's when he
tested several designs of prototype units. His history
of rebreathers stems back to the early days of mixed gas
rebreathers alongside Bill Stone and Richard Pile, and
for a short while taught students to dive the Cis Lunar
Mark 4. Kevin Gurr was one of the Uk's first technical
divers and was responsible for setting up the franchise
IANTD in the UK during the early 1990's. Since then Kevin
has taught many of the Uk's technical diving instructors
although during the new millennium dropped back from training
to focus on marine engineering projects which included
the full development of the Ouroboros closed circuit rebreather.
Kevin is a director of closed circuit research Ltd and
Delta P technology and is based in Dorset England.
Phill Short
Development diver and instructor
/ Ouroboros rebreather
Fundamental in the original design & development of
the Ouroboros rebreather, Phill Short worked alongside Kevin
Gurr for many years within the Phoenix training operation
and the VR3 dive computer. Today Phill Short works for himself
and is established throughout the community as one of the
UK's leading technical instructors. His full details can
be seen on his own website listed above. Phill Short has
been instrumental in modern day exploration aside from his
full time training business, his involvement in UK cave
exploration is well documented as well as in Russian and
many other country's. Phill has made over 5000 dives and
there is very little that he does not teach in the technical
structure of diver development. He has taught many IANTD
instructors himself as well as several well known divers
and is based in Dorset England.
Leigh Bishop
Development diver / ouroboros rebreather
Leigh Bishop had known and dived
with Kevin Gurr for over a decade before he joined the
development team, his background deep wreck diving. Leigh
has dedicated himself to UK deep shipwreck exploration
since the early days of mixed gas diving in England. He
first started diving
rebreathers in 1993, cis lunar, prism and the very
early prototype inspiration. Leigh is a prolific writer
and photographer on the subject of deep shipwreck exploration
and has been instrumental in many significant expeditions
over the years. His King Edward VII expedition became
the first European expedition to explore shipwrecks deeper
than 100m / 330ft and since then has been on expeditions
to the SS
Egypt gold ship, Britannic, Titanic,
Lusitania and many more. Today he is focused on the exploration
of ocean liners and virgin shipwrecks and his research
had led to the discovery of scores of new wrecks. Today
he is a professional diver and travels the world presenting
and lecturing on deep shipwreck exploration.

Alan Wright
Development diver / ouroboros rebreather
Back ground, wreck diver and charter skipper Alan has
been diving mixed gas and rebreathers since the early
1990's and is a full IANTD instructor of technical and
advanced diving. Alan runs the family business charter
vessel Salutay off the northern coastline of Ireland,
and has been instrumental in the area of new shipwreck
discovery. Alan dives deep wrecks and was a member of
Kevin Gurr's Britannic 1997 expedition he was also selected
for the original closed circuit saturation team and trained
with the other three at the fort william SAT diving center.
Alan is a professional diver at work and has been involved
in several commercial operations.
'Adam is an IANTD Trimix Rebreather Instructor based in
North Wales who has been actively involved in UK wreck diving
for nearly a decade and rebreather diving since the late
nineties diving the Inspiration CCR. A team player who is
methodical in his approach to diving and teaching made him
an ideal candidate to join the test team.'
During the last couple of years Adam has been involved in
a number of Technical Diving projects including a documentary
shown on Channel 4 about the ship wrecks of the Battle of
Jutland called ‘Clash of the Dreadnaughts’.
